How to Share Free Food & Products with Olio
I hate wasting food but sometimes life gets super busy and something I bought a week ago will not end up getting used or will not be used in the best before date.
Recently I had an abundance of cleaning products that I knew I was never going to use after going crazy with the cleaning rage last year, and a lot of them were not cruelty free.
My wonderful friend and Nutritionist Maham told me all about this wonderful community based app when I was lamenting the expired food and half used cleaning products clogging up my kitchen cupboards.
What is Olio?
Olio is a community based initiative which aims to reduce food and waste in general and help people bond with their neighbours and community by sharing their food and unwanted items for FREE!
OLIO connects neighbours with each other and with local businesses so surplus food can be shared, not thrown away. This could be food nearing its sell-by date in local stores, spare home-grown vegetables, bread from your baker, or the groceries in your fridge when you go away. For your convenience, OLIO can also be used for non-food household items too.https://olioex.com/about/
How do you Use Olio?
You will be notified anytime a listing becomes available in your area.
How Does It Work?
You can either list a product you want to share within your local community and specify what it is, condition of the product i.e. NEW, USED etc. and then tell people where they can pick it up and if needed at what times.
I Don’t Want Strangers Coming to my Home
When I initially started using the Olio app, I put down the nearest tube station as the
It’s all based on trust, but it’s also a great way to meet new people and I would say meet in a public place if you can as you get the hang of it and use your judgement.
Some people don’t want to talk to me, so I’ve left the items outside the house and they’ve picked them up and let me know.
What happens when someone wants to pick up and item or I want to take an item?
You message the user, arrange a time and place to meet and presto the item is yours!
Items are usually given free of charge but do clarify on the listing if this is not the case.
What have I taken or given on Olio?
I’ve given away cleaning products, dry foods like walnuts and even cleaning sponges to a lady who collecting to give to charity.
I’ve had students take items, busy mums and so many more.
It’s been such a lovely way to meet new people in my local community and to finally feel part of one after moving to London Alhamdulillah (Praise be to God).
Would I recommend it?
I would totally recommend Olio to share food or unwanted items and meet new people in my community!
Thank you to Maham for sharing with me so I can share with you all!
