I always start out with the best of intentions and it always goes horribly wrong but I decided to cancel my gym membership.
Back in November 2018, I put out a post on Instagram stories getting people together to start a fitness group because I was so tired of my body.
I was trapped and my weight was stopping me from being my best self.
So we formed this group which I started as an Instagram chat group, then it went to Whatsapp and initially, we had LOADS of members but slowly people started falling away and now it’s a really nice chat group.
Eventually, I started attending the gym and going for the Pay as You Go Classes and then decided to get a gym membership which through my workplace meant it was pretty discounted.
Well, I had good intentions and I went properly for about a month and then Ramadan happened.
And then I got busy.
And then we had a busy summer period of weddings, birthdays and events and the final straw that made me cancel?
I’d changed my working days to attend this Zumba class and the instructor cancelled the class due to health issues.
Now I have TRIED to be a Gym person.
I’ve been a member of various gyms in the last 6 years since I got married and moved down to London from Yorkshire.
I’ve tried to walk on my own when I’m at home, I’ve tried skipping, I’ve tried Tabata, HIIT.
You get the picture.
That was until I realised 2 things.
Exercise in a fat body is just HARD!
You move slower, you feel other people are looking and judging you and focus on your weight just makes you feel bad.
So I decided to try something new.
In February I worked with Maham a Nutritionist based in London who has an Intuitive Eating Approach.
She helped me understand my body and what my triggers were when it comes to food.
We did a lot of work around understanding my relationship with food and helping me get out of the habit of dieting.
Food should be pleasurable as well as fuel, but it should never be something you restrict.
Honestly, working on my mindset around food helped me in a lot of other areas in my life and I find myself snacking mindlessly much less.
I eat for pleasure and I still have diet culture thoughts because I’m a human and you can’t undo over 30 years of programming in 6 weeks or even 6 months, but it is a start.
These sessions were gifted in exchange for a review. I’ll be posting more about this soon.
Since August I bought a Lifetime membership to BollyX.
At the time of writing it’s on sale for $49 for a lifetime membership which is a STEAL!
BollyX is an online workout class that specialised in Bollywood Dance Aerobic Exercises.
You can choose from 10, 15, 30 or 50-minute workout classes to some banging Bollywood tunes.
And you can create your own workout to the songs in their database.
Miraculously I’ve kept it up Alhamdulillah!
I LOVE to dance so I don’t really realise I’m exercising to some of my favourite tunes in the comfort of my home.
Lastly, I realised I needed help with core and toning so I enlisted Adam of Fiftyshadesofworkouts who does FREE workout challenges and I decided to not only do the September Core challenge but I also paid him to make me a personalised challenge.
Guess how much?
And all the money goes to charity.
Those 3 things combined with the support of Adam and everyone else in the challenge has done more for my mental health and most importantly made me feel amazing Alhamdulillah.
So if you are stuck in a rut then don’t despair.
Find an activity you love, for me, it’s Bollywood Dance for you it might be Taekwondo!
And stick to it.
Something is better than nothing.
Go for it!
