Brutally Honest – Melanie Brown (Book Review)
Who doesn’t know Mel B from The Spice Girls?
But do we know Melanie Brown the woman, and everything she is however complex?
I remember when The Spice Girls burst onto the scene in the 90s and EVERYONE at school was singing Wannabe.
I wasn’t a Hijabi then haha!
Scary Spice was one of the craziest and having read Geri Halliwell’s book years ago, I knew I wanted to find out more about Mel B.
I expected a story about the crazy Spice Girl life and insider gossip, but what I got was so different.
What is it about?
Brutally Honest traces Melanie Brown’s life, the good, the bad and the ugly.
I’ll be honest, this is a hard book to read or listen to.
Descriptions of Domestic Violence, Substance Abuse, Humiliation are hard to hear and especially from someone as seemingly strong as Mel B.
But I listened and I heard her story and I understood how a strong woman could be coerced and cowered by a man.
She delves into the history of why and how she came to me and it was harrowing listening at times but it is worth it.
At every step when it got too hard, I had to stop especially when the topic turned to Domestic Violence and the vivid descriptions really upset me.
But this is something that can happen to anyone, so it’s important to listen to hear or read how to recognise the signs and how you can help someone in that situation.
Money and power can’t shield you from such situations, unfortunately.
Would I recommend it?
I’d recommend Brutally Honest by Melanie Brown if you can read or listen to it.
Cautionary advisory as it is triggering so if the topics of Domestic Violence, Self Harm, Drug Abuse etc trigger you, give this one a miss.
This is the 7th book in my 34 in 34 book challenge where I attempt to read or listen to 34 books in my 34th year of life.
