Becoming by Michelle Obama is the story of an iconic figure.
The first Black First Lady of The United States she was a figure of hope for many and a testament to the fact that dreams do come true.
While she was not an elected official, she made her mark with her funny, straight talking and empowering style and left a legacy that few First Ladies will be able to surpass.
This is my 3rd book in my 34 in 34 challenge and you can check out the other books here.
What is it about?
Contrary to my own personal beliefs Michelle Obama did not come from wealth.
She grew up in a working class neighbourhood in Chicago surrounded by the same family and friends for many years to come.
Her story takes us right back to the very serious little girl Michelle Robinson was and how the values she learned at such a young age helped her become Michelle Obama the icon.
I listened to this book on Audible.
I’ve had an Audible account for a long time, and at various times tried to get into it but with an attention span of a goldfish and this challenge looming over my head, I knew I wanted to get through this book but I’m not able to read as much now.
So, I decided to try listening to Audiobooks on my commute into work and so far I really enjoyed it!
Back to the book
I loved listening to Michelle (can I call you that?) and her American drawl narrate her story.
On my way to and back from work I wanted to know more about her.
Away from the mass media hype around her and mythology present around her family she took us back to a time when her whole world was just her parents, grandparents and brother.
How she worked hard to be where she is now and on reflection she had many insights for anyone listening to or reading her book now.
Would I recommend it?
I would highly recommend you listen or read Becoming by Michelle Obama.
This book is part memoir, part inspiration and part manifesto that we can all become the person who fulfils their potential.
This is the 2nd book in my 34 in 34 book challenge where I attempt to read or listen to 34 books in my 34th year of life.
